Tasters competition

Winner

The winner of this extra competition is Dr.A.Turkson from Newbury who got 7 places right. They are now the proud owner of a copy of The Book of the Great Western. This sought after volume was published by the Times in 1970, and is one of a limited edition of only 3000.

For those of you intrigued by the locations of the 'taster' photographs, here are the answers.

  1. Didcot Railway Centre - 6023 King Edward II in beautiful blue livery
  2. Culham station - an early morning train bringing commuters to the nearby Culham Science Centre
  3. Aylesbury station - 19th May 2017, the last 'Bubble Car' service between Princes Risborough and Aylesbury
  4. Caledonian Sleeper - breakfast being served whilst travelling on the West Highland Line in June 2017
  5. Abingdon station - 30th June 1984 saw two final specials between Oxford and Abingdon, this is the morning one
  6. Fort William - the Jacobite steam service due to depart, hauled by Black 5 number 62005
  7. End of the line at BMW Cowley - a Thames Valley Branches special standing with the lead engine at the stop block, almost opposite Horspath cricket ground
  8. Beeches Light Railway - at the home of Adrian Shooter in Steeple Aston, the model 'T' Ford with a leaky radiator
  9. Oxford station - showing a local DMU service about to depart from patform 3
  10. Hinksey sidings, Oxford - the long footbridge is a good vantage point to watch the trains go past
  11. Abingdon branch - this is one of several pieces of old broad gauge bridge rail which can be found along the path which follows the old trackbed
  12. Quainton Road station - a rare visit by a special Chiltern Rail service from Oxford Parkway to Aylesbury on 10th June 2018 before the line to Bletchley was closed for redevelopment
  13. Didcot Railway Centre - this one should have been easy
  14. Chinnor station - a rather wet afternoon visit to the Chinnor and Princess Risborough railway
  15. Didcot station - the Orient Express visited on 22nd January 1985 hauled by 47500 Great Western which was was repainted Brunswick green later that year and given new brass name and number plates as part of the GWR 150th anniversary celebrations
